Performance related pay

The TMO’s Performance Related Pay scheme applies to the majority of senior and middle managers as well as many professional staff in IT and Technical Services.

The scheme has two principal considerations:

Firstly to improve individual & organisational performance:

  • by helping the organisation to review and clarify its aims;
  • by focusing managers' sights on key objectives to help achieve those aims;
  • by recognising and rewarding above average performance.

Secondly to improve the recruitment & retention of good staff:

  • by allowing the best performers to increase their earnings;
  • by creating more fairness in the way people are rewarded;
  • by clearly indicating to current and potential employees that the TMO encourages achievement, and appreciates and rewards good work.

Target setting

Central to any scheme of performance assessment is a joint agreement between individuals and their managers of targets to be achieved in the next twelve months.

These targets are not a list of each person's principal responsibilities, but are perhaps eight to twelve specific ways in which the individual will be expected to make a contribution to the organisation's goals in the coming year. They will be linked to the key responsibilities of the job and are likely to be a combination of corporate, departmental and personal development targets. They are normally recorded on a standard form and signed by both parties.

Overall performance:

Whilst the annual review discussion will be focused around specific targets it is equally important to consider overall performance in the job.
